How to Pass a Drug Test for DMT

Although the history of DMT consumption goes back hundreds of years, the emergence of its synthetic form has sparked renewed interest in it recently. Among the questions that have arisen in this regard, our main concern is the question of how to pass a drug test for DMT.

What Is DMT and How Does It Work?

N, N-dimethyltryptamine, also known as DMT, is a hallucinogenic drug that produces psychedelic effects similar to LSD and magic mushrooms. It occurs naturally in many plants, which have been used for ritual purposes by various cultures in South America for centuries. DMT is the main ingredient in ayahuasca, which is the famous Amazonian hallucinogenic brew.

In addition to oral administration, the following consumption methods are possible:

  • smoking in a pipe or bong (a mixture of herbs called Changa or synthetic powder can be used),
  • vaporizing (vape pens with DMT are available),
  • snorting,
  • intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) injection.

The effects of DMT include but are not limited to:

  • euphoria,
  • visual and auditory hallucinations,
  • an altered sense of time and space,
  • out-of-body experience.

When ingested orally, DMT is metabolized by monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymes present in the gastrointestinal tract (1), so separately consumed DMT does not produce any psychedelic effects unless your dose exceeds the metabolic capacity of your monoamine oxidase. To prevent this metabolism, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) is required. It neutralizes monoamine oxidase and allows the drug to enter your bloodstream and reach the brain unhindered. This is why at least two plants are required to brew ayahuasca. First is the Psychotria viridis, which is the source of DMT, and second is the Banisteriopsis caapi, which is the source of MAOI.

Other routes of administration such as smoking, vaporizing, snorting or injecting do not require the MAOI, because they allow DMT to reach the brain before it is metabolized by your body's monoamine oxidase. This produces a stronger hallucinogenic effect that lasts for a shorter time.

How Long Does It Stay in Your System?

Knowing how long this substance stays in your system is essential for passing a drug test for DMT. As with any drug, the duration of time it takes to produce effects and get out of your system varies depending on dosage, personal metabolism, and other details. Typically, synthetic DMT takes 5 to 10 minutes to kick in, while plant-based brews take half an hour or more.

Although ayahuasca trip may last several hours, typical trips from non-orally administered DMT are known to be very short-lasting, starting from several minutes and up to 45 minutes.

Since this drug is rapidly metabolized, the time its residues stay in your system is also very short. For example, blood concentration falls below the detection limit within 1 hour after intramuscular injection. Less than 1% of DMT can be found in urine 24 hours after consumption. (2)

We do not have any scientific data to determine exactly how long DMT remains in saliva or hair. All available research on this topic concerns only urine, blood and cerebrospinal fluid. (3) The information about DMT detection time in saliva and hair currently available (as of July 2020) on other sites is not scientifically proven or credible.

Based on the data from other drugs, we can say that the detection time in saliva is usually much shorter than in urine and close to or slightly longer than in blood. That is, for DMT, the possible range will be one to several hours. Given that hallucinogens are generally difficult to detect in saliva, the lower end of the range, which is about 1 hour, is most likely.

As for the hair, given the ultra-fast metabolism of DMT, it is doubtful that its residues would have had time to be deposited in the follicle in such a short time.

Does DMT Show Up on Drug Tests?

No. At the time of this writing (July 2020), there are no drug tests that show DMT use. Neither the SAMHSA-5 standard panel for basic drugs used in pre-employment and probation tests, nor the expanded drug testing panels include it. Its chemical formula is not similar to any of the other drugs from screening panels, so it should not trigger the false-positive result as another substance. (4)

How to Pass a DMT Test

With that being said, there is no need to prepare for a drug test after using DMT. If you have not used any other substance that could be detected during testing or cause a false positive result, you will pass any test—urine, saliva, hair or blood—without having to detox your body, substitute your sample, or otherwise trick the lab.
